A senior Russian banker who had waged a campaign against banking crime died early on Thursday after being shot by two gunmen in an apparent contract killing. Andrei Kozlov, first deputy chairman of the Russian central bank, died hours after being seriously wounded outside a Moscow football stadium on Wednesday night.
Mr Kozlov, 41, was responsible for supervision and reform of Russia’s more than 1,200 banks. He had ruffled many feathers in the industry by withdrawing licences from dozens of banks suspected of involvement in money laundering.
The Russian Mafia has its muscle and murder-for-hire types all over the globe nowadays. Can Putin do anything to stop his country's image from sinking lower?
Today's FT also has an article on Chinese financial crime spiking in a spectacular fashion. I guess ex-Commies have a problem with banking and high finance, two very capitalist institutions.
