'Spike' Dubs was a warm and kind senior FSO, a rara avis in the Foreign Service and a dedicated & brave public servant. I knew Spike rather well when I was Special Asst. to the IO Asst. SecState back in late '78 & as an Arabist, I was told by Spike just moments after he had been informed that he had received his first Ambassador's baton to go to Afghanistan.
Sadly, it appears he died either in the hands of Afghan terrorists or was killed by Soviet Military Intelligence as part of an elaborately-disguised Kabuki-theater assassination. Senior members of the CIA who dealt with Afghanistan at the time suspect the latter.
"Much have I seen and known; cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments, ...the fortune of us that are the moon's men doth ebb and flow like the sea, being govern'd, as the sea is, by the moon" [Henry IV, I.ii.31-33] HISTORY NEVER REPEATS ITSELF, BUT IT OFTEN RHYMES "There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America." Otto von Bismarck
