The Friday evening news reveals clearly where the BBC, PBS and the International Left are all tending---blame Israel and exalt the doughty brave Lebanese for withstanding all the undeserved suffering caused by the recent events.
An ancient Bolshevik fossil named Simpson stands in Damascus intoning the new increased stature of Syria among the Arab states for resisting.... I switch to Fox which at that very moment is listing the Arab countries now passively supporting Israel against Syria and Iran---what's in that Damascus water, anyway?
It's clear that the International Left's mental mosh-pit sides with terrorism because the restless Bolshies oppose Bush and his allies and all his works---even if the heroes of the ultra-left consort with international lepers like Chavez, Castro and Kim Il-Jung as well as the so-called "resistance" movements that superannuated degenerate dirty old people [keeping Helen Thomas and Cindy Sheehan in mind to balance the gender inequality of "dirty old men"] fondly remember as pivotal to their youthful deformation.
And now the weathervane Left, especially the pretzel-backbone Kerry/Kennedy wing, senses that Bush's stout resistance to terrorism might open a political opportunity---even Bill Clinton, who a couple years ago swore he would be a foot-soldier for Israel if need be, now does the usual appeasement/assume-the-position recessional before the fanaticism of Islamic whack jobs.
And the Socialist Spanish PM bows and scrapes before the Islamic terrorists who enabled him to win an election by killing a couple hundred of his countrymen in Madrid---yes, it's all Bush's [the Israelis'] fault and those poor misunderstood "resistance' fighters have every right to explode themselves among Israeli and Iraqi civilians. They're not terrorists, but valiant resisters.
I just wonder how far down that path the international left, never guided by principles other than the main chance and always hostages to fortune, will walk before they recognize themselves as their own worst enemy?
Meanwhile, David Brooks does a good analysis on why Bill Kristol must be resisted when he calls for a pre-emptive move against Iran. Brooks cites Fukuyama and George Will as disciples of Edmund Burke, who knew that rash actions often lead to unintended consequences. Better not to tinker with complex situations.
But Brooks also notes that Churchill was more unpopular than Bush in the thirties when he was adamant in resisting the Nazi menace, while leftist hero Neville Chamberlain was declaiming "peace in our time." Turns out that skunk-at-the-picnic Winston was correct in discerning Hitler was a mad megalomaniac who could only be stopped by force.
The left looks at Ahmedinejad and thinks, ah, this is a fellow we can do business with. Just like Jimmy Carter went to N. Korea in 1994 because Kim Il-Jung was a fellow who would cease building a nuclear bomb if we offered him incentives.
So Billy Jeff, the erstwhile wannabe-Israeli soldier forked over $4 billion to make Kim stop. The overlawyered Clintoon crew was earnest and sincere. They signed an "agreement."
Gee, how'd that work out again?
Same as the "agreement" hammered out last year in UNSC Res. 1559 by sincere, earnest diplomats who believed Hezbollah should disarm and that the moral force of the UN would cause this to happen.
How did that work out?
Or like the "agreement" signed in May of this year with the Govt of Sudan to halt the Jamjaweed attacks on the refugees in Darfur.
Remind me again on how that's coming along.
The earnest, sincere social engineers of the International Left believe Peter Pan will fly if we just close our eyes and wish it. Wasn't Peter a fictional character?
Israel is experiencing an existential crisis versus people who wish to destroy it and kill everyone who is Jewish now living in the country. The bloodthirsty terrorists in Hezbollah apologized for killing the two Arab children in Nazareth. Their genocidal agenda only goes for Jews, and the Jews' allies.
So watch out, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Emirates. You're in Hezbollah's crosshairs and fair game.
"Much have I seen and known; cities of men And manners, climates, councils, governments, ...the fortune of us that are the moon's men doth ebb and flow like the sea, being govern'd, as the sea is, by the moon" [Henry IV, I.ii.31-33] HISTORY NEVER REPEATS ITSELF, BUT IT OFTEN RHYMES "There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America." Otto von Bismarck
